World Dance Day 2019 April 29th

World Dance Day, also known as International Dance Day, is celebrated on April 29th every year. The day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute. The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who was born in 1727, a French dancer and Ballet master and a great reformer of dance.

World Dance Day should increase the awareness of the importance of dance among the general public. Its goal is to persuade governments all over the world to provide a proper place for dance in all areas of education. Around the world there are events on World Dance Day, such as open-door courses, exhibitions, articles concerning all styles of dance, tea dances, dinner dances, demonstrations to the public in areas such as shopping malls and special dance performances.

World Dance Day is a great opportunity for those involved in all dance styles to publicise the benefits of dance to the general public worldwide as, being under the umbrella of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), doors are opened and opportunities are available to promote your event through free publicity in local media, television, radio and the press, that you otherwise might not have had access to.

The British Dance Council Teachers’ Committee would like to hear reports from any World Dance Day activities that you run, or plan to run, so that the event can be publicised on the BDC website. This would further publicise World Dance Day and encourage more dancers to become involved. Any reports can be emailed to: janby1@hotmail.co.uk
